Every Nier Building Inspections consultant is a certified professional inspector. We are certified in construction, land development, mold radon, stucco and duct and envelope testing. Our certifications are from PRO-LAB,ESA, State of Georgia, International Code Council and Georgia Soil and Water Conservation District.

We’ve been certified as a Level V “Professional Building Official” by BOAG (Building Officials Association in Georgia), Master Code Professional (MCP) from the ICC (International Code Council) and Certified Master Inspector from GAHI (Georgia Association of Home Inspectors).

The Master Code Professional (MCP) is the highest level of certification the Code Council offers. The Code Council has certified thousands of individuals, but only a small select number have attained this high level of achievement, approximately 800 individuals (as of 1/2017). To obtain this level of certification requires and demonstrates commitment to the profession, diverse knowledge of codes, and a high level of self-initiative. Master Code Professionals are typically responsible for all technical and management aspects of code enforcement.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• management of a code enforcement department
• supervision of building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and elevator inspectors and support staff
• performing or supervising performance of building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical plan review
• when necessary, inspecting or supervising inspection of structures for compliance with the International Codes® and referenced standards.

Michael Nier CBO, MCP – Owner, Professional Building Official

Michael has lived in Georgia for nearly 30 years and resides in East Cobb with his wife Vyrna of over 20 years and their children. Michael is a Master Code Professional through International Code Council (ICC) and holds over 40 certifications from the ICC, (NFPA) National Fire Protection Association and (BOAG) Building Officials Association of Georgia. Through BOAG, Michael is a Level V Professional Building Official, their highest certification. He has over 25 Years of technical and managerial experience in both private government partnerships as well as within traditional municipal government. He also has over 13 years of experience in the construction industry. Michael previously owned and operated a small "turn-key" remodeling company specializing in residential and light commercial buildings. Michael is working with various municipal and commercial clients, responsibilities have included; Chief Building Official for the startup of two cities in Georgia, performing; department set up, organization and implementation, plan review, permitting, code enforcement, field inspection, supervision of other inspections, review staff and training employees. Michael has served as Building Official in numerous jurisdictions in Georgia both as interim as well as primary. Michael is the President of the Georgia Association of Home Inspectors (GAHI) 2023 to present. He is past Vice President of Northwest Georgia Inspectors Association and served on the Fire Sprinkler Exam Development Committee for the International Code Councils’ Board for International Professional Standards for 12 years. Michael has taught home inspection and code certification classes to Architects, Engineers, municipal inspectors, home inspectors, remodelers and builders for nearly two decades In Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.

Peter (Pete) Villhauer P.E. Engineer

Pete has lived over 30 years in Georgia with his Wife Bobbi and has 4 adult children. Pete has been practicing Engineering for over 40 years. He is registered in Georgia and Virginia. He has experience in Mechanical (HVAC), Steel structures, concrete and retaining walls. Pete has been working with NBI on special projects for over 20 years.

Justin Mercure, Professional Home Inspector and Testing Professional

Born and raised in Georgia Justin lives in Woodstock with his wife Tina. Justin has been with NBI for nearly a decade and has performed over 2,000 home inspections. Justin has worked in and out of several municipalities around Atlanta performing inspections and NPDES surveys. Coupled with that, Justin does much of the environmental testing services provided by the company. Justin is certified for NPDES Inspections and Plan Review, Certified Mold Inspector and certified in Duct and Envelop testing (DET). He has over 20 Years of technical and business experience in both government and corporate settings. His experience includes residential and commercial property management, purchase, rehab and leasing. He is heavily involved in marketing and most of the auxiliary services the company offers. His Inspection experience includes municipal inspections, residential and commercial buildings, land development, NPDES inspections and monitoring, DET testing, Mold, Radon and Microbial testing.

Paul Ivey CBO, MCP, Certified Building Official CBO, Master Code professional MCP – Commercial Inspections and Plan Review

Paul lives in Cumming and raised his family there. Paul has been an integral part of the construction and inspection industry for most of his career here in the region. Paul taught at Gwinnett Technical College in the Construction Management program for several years and has over 40 years of experience with residential and commercial construction. Including over 20 years performing building code related services for metro Atlanta- area for different municipalities. Paul was the Building Official in Alpharetta, Norcross, Brookhaven and provided Inspection and Plan review services to Peachtree Corners and Sandy Springs. He is past President of Northwest Georgia Inspectors Association and has been involved in the code development and enforcement process in Georgia. Paul is a Master Code Professional and maintains more than 20 certifications including all plan review and inspection disciplines (building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing and fire).

David Gran CBO, MCP. – Certified Building Official CBO, Master Code professional MCP– Plan Reviewer

David Gran hung up his hammer and picked up a clipboard in 1989 when he began his combination building inspection career with Monterey County, Ca. He left there as the Senior Building Inspector in 2004 to become a Building Inspector and then Plan Reviewer for Cobb County, Ga. David held positions as Senior and Supervising Plan Reviewer before retiring from Cobb County in 2024. David holds 25 ICC certifications, including Master Code Professional. David is now a Plan Reviewer for Nier Building Inspections. David and his wife Kechia are just recently empty nesters and are enjoying life in Powder Springs, Ga.

Tom Clark. – Residential R-5 Code Inspector

Resides in north Georgia with his wife. Tom started his professional career as a Journeyman Roofer for nearly a decade and then became a Los Angeles City Journeyman Plumber working with such clients as Anheuser Busch Draft Beer Installations and On-premises manager for Triangle Distributing for over a decade. Tom then became involved in inspections in the early 1990’s with Inspect-tech Home Inspections which was a National Home Inspection company, and he performed over 5,000 inspections and oversaw Customer Service Center with over 150 inspectors Nation Wide. Then, he opened his own Inspection company in 2000 Signature Inspections and provided home inspections for the Southern California Real Estate Market. He personally conducted over 6,000 inspections in his 20 years of operations. Since 2020 Tom worked as a third-party inspector with Nova Engineering and Environmental performing code compliance inspections for the City of Atlanta Contract. As an R-5 combination inspector, Tom Joined our team in 2024 providing code compliance inspections, consulting, construction defect investigation and other services the company provides from Atlanta to North Georgia. In total Tom has over 50 years of experience in the construction industry. Every day he will tell you: “I thoroughly love what I get too do each day.”

Walter "Scott" Berlyoung – Residential R-5 Code Inspector

Scott has lived in GA with his wife Kate since 1986. They have two married daughters. Scott has completed over 5,000 residential inspections and many more Radon surveys. Scott began his GA training with Certifications from Hometech 6/1998, Edifice 11/1998, and is a FEMA/PaRR Disaster Inspector #41428, Energy Auditor Georgia Power RESNET, CMC Energy Tune-UP Auditor with Level 1 Thermographer/ Infrared from ITC/FLIR #33888, and PRISM Environmental Air Sampling Professional. Scott was first Code certified October of 1998 SBCCI/CABO #2691, current ICC Combo Certified #5187106-R5. Radon Measurement and Mitigation Inspection Residential and Commercial NEHA #10321ORT. Scott has been a member of the American Society of Home Inspectors, ACI 25yr member and Mentor #206969, ASHI GA Chapter board member 2008, President in 2017. He has also been a member of the Georgia Association of Home Inspectors (GAHI) for over 25 yrs. CCI #99034, and serves as a Board member and Treasurer since 2022.

Jaquavious “Jay” Husband - Certified Residential Building Inspector

Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Jay Husband is in his fifth year as a Certified Home Inspector and brings a strong technical background and local knowledge to the team. After completing trade school to become a HVAC Technician, he began his career with the company as an apprentice and quickly developed into a full inspector through hands-on training and field experience. He later served as an ICC Building Inspector for City of Roswell, gaining valuable experience with building codes, safety standards, and municipal inspections. In addition to general home inspections, he is certified in duct and envelope testing, as well as radon and mold testing, helping clients better understand both the structure and environmental conditions of a home. Trained and mentored by Michael, whose guidance helped shape his detailed inspection approach and commitment to educating clients. He is currently working toward becoming a Master Code Inspector through the International Code Council (ICC), continuing to expand his knowledge to provide thorough, reliable inspections that help homeowners make confident decisions.

Vyrna Nier – Senior Executive of Operations

Vyrna has lived in Cobb County with her husband now for over two decades. Vyrna is a professional watercolor artist and painting teacher. One of her special Marketing projects with NBI, is offering watercolor house portraits. She oversees much of the day-to-day back-office operations, banking, event planning and marketing ventures. She has a degree in Television and movie production and worked for several years at Turner as a Producer for the Award Shows at the South American division.

Tandi Allain. – Office Manager

Tandi was born and raised in Georgia. Has lived in Walton County for over 40 years. She is married and has two daughters. She has worked as an administrative assistant in the construction field for over 20 years. She began working with Michael when she was at Macon E. Gooch III Building Consultants since 2000. She fielded questions, scheduled inspections, and created reports and submitted them to their respective municipalities. She now has brought her vast years of experience to the Nier Building Inspections Team. In her spare time, she loves spending time outside, riding ATV's, and of course spending time with her family and 4 grandchildren.

Victoria “Torii” Clark– Office Assistant

Torii lives in Watkinsville, Georgia, where she enjoys spending time with her family. She is married and a proud mom of two kids. At Nier Building Inspections, she creates and sends out inspection reports and helps keep things running smoothly by making sure reports get sent out and following up on paperwork. When she’s not working, she’s helping out at her church’s preschool. In her free time, she loves being with her family and supporting the people around her.

Alexis “Lexi” Morrow – Billing Department

Lexi was born and raised in Georgia and lives in east Georgia with her husband and two daughters. Lexi has nearly a decade of experience working as an office manager and handling the accounts department at other offices. Lexi is our billing and accounts receivable professional and processes much of the engineering paperwork. Lexi is passionate about family life and takes pride in balancing her professional responsibilities with being a present and devoted mom.

Christopher Nier. – Inspector in Training and Technical Support

Born and raised in Cobb County. Christopher is an inspector in training and has attended multiple classes on inspection services and Code related training. Christopher is working to understand the business development aspects of the company as well as the technical aspects. Christopher provides computer support and company services.

Valerie Nier - Inspector in Training and Advertising and Sales Support

Born and raised in Cobb County. Valerie is an inspector in training and is looking to understand the inspection process and business services side of the company. Valerie has worked on advertising, training and exam development and other company services.
